The Announcement That Changed the Landscape
In January 2007, Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone and the internet moved from our desks into our pockets. This technological revolution created incredible opportunities for connection, learning and communication. But it also transformed access to pornography. What was once confined to magazines and DVDs became available anytime, anywhere and often without safeguards. Things would never be the same.
The Announcement That Changed Ian's Family
Later that same year, Ian Henderson received a phone call that would change his life forever. His father had been arrested for possessing indecent images of children. Over time, the family discovered a decades-long struggle with pornography that had escalated from legal adult content into criminal behaviour. The consequences were devastating. A few months later, Ian's father was diagnosed with cancer and died shortly after being sentenced. As Ian and his family tried to process the trauma, grief and abuse involved, difficult questions began to emerge about pornography, addiction, brokenness and the impact these behaviours have on individuals, families and communities.
Something Had to Change
What Ian witnessed was an extreme example, but it raised a bigger question: if pornography could cause this much damage in one family, what impact was it having across society? What about the users, partners, children, performers, families and communities affected by pornography every day? These questions eventually led to the creation of The Naked Truth Project in the UK in 2014.
Inspired by Faith, Accessible to All
Ian's Christian faith has always been central to the story of The Naked Truth Project. Inspired by a desire to help people find freedom, healing and hope, the organisation was established to create honest conversations around pornography and provide practical support for individuals, families, schools and churches. While rooted in Christian faith, much of the organisation's work is designed to be accessible to people of all faiths and none.
The South African Story
A Growing Need
Across South Africa, conversations about pornography and its impact are often difficult to have. Cultural taboos, shame and uncertainty can leave parents feeling unprepared, educators feeling overwhelmed and churches unsure how to respond. As a result, many people face these challenges alone.
While awareness of addiction and recovery is growing, pornography presents unique challenges that affect not only individuals, but also partners, families, schools and communities, yet specialist, affordable and accessible support remains limited.
A South African Response
In 2024, we began exploring how the work of The Naked Truth Project could be adapted for South Africa. It quickly became clear that families, schools, churches and communities needed culturally relevant education, trauma-informed and research-informed resources, and practical support that reflected the realities of South African life.
Visible South Africa was established as an independently governed and locally led response to that need. Our vision is to make trusted education, prevention and recovery support accessible to South Africans from every community, helping parents, schools, churches and individuals respond with truth, confidence and hope.
International Movement
Visible South Africa works in partnership with Visible Ministries and The Naked Truth Project. We benefit from more than a decade of experience, research, programme development and recovery resources, while adapting content for the unique realities, cultures and challenges of South Africa.
We share a common vision and learn from one another, while remaining independently governed and locally led. Together we Open Eyes and Free Lives from the Damaging Impacts of Porn in our various contexts. In South Africa that means parents, schools, churches and communities to address pornography, with truth, confidence and hope.
